Coal plant planned near Sweetwater
By ELIZABETH SOUDER / The Dallas Morning News
February 20, 2008 Tenaska Inc. plans to build a traditional coal-fired power plant near Sweetwater that will capture carbon dioxide and pipe the greenhouse gas to West Texas oil fields to boost production.
The Omaha, Neb., power company plans to spend about $3 billion on the project, the first of its kind. The company said the project is viable only if the U.S. regulates carbon dioxide emissions.
Tenaska filed Tuesday for an air permit with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
The plant will be a traditional coal plant, which produces more pollution than other types of power plants, but will include equipment to capture about 90 percent of the carbon dioxide emissions.
Tenaska would sell the carbon dioxide to oil producers, who inject the gas into aging oil wells to boost production. The oil producers would be responsible for accounting for the carbon dioxide and assuring it remains underground.
